Street Art is the latest international art movement on a par with previous art movements such as Pop Art and Surrealism. In the last two decades it has transcended its original formats ( graffiti, bombing and mural art) and established itself as a new medium entirely. This new creative force is currently exploding in all sorts of positive directions in a neighborhood near you.
New Zealand has not been left out and there are many exciting street artists of all ages who are taking their art out of the galleries and onto the streets where it is free for all to enjoy.
Wellington is home to a particularly fertile and prolific group of artists, some of whom have gone on to develop high-profile globetrotting careers. Many of them are full time professional artists who have been to art school and used their skills and connections to make the city a vibrant place to live. If the Wellington scene has a flavor it is one of constant experimentation and pushing the boundaries of street art beyond the usual recipes of big colorful cartoons and graphic inscrutability.
