‘A beautiful big mural at the Rintoul Street entrance to South Wellington Intermediate School (SWIS) was completed in December 2014. This is the third mural to be painted by young people living in the southern suburbs of Wellington as part of Paint Up.
This year’s project was delivered by youth organisation Eastern Southern Youth Trust. They facilitated a series of workshops at the Island Bay Community Centre with a group of year 7 and 8 students, mostly from SWIS.
Artist Chris Barrand was commissioned to lead the project. During the workshops, Barrand helped the students to design a mural that reflects them, their sense of community and the surrounding environment. The workshops were also attended by Council’s Graffiti Programmes Advisor and by a local Community Constable from the Police. They talked with the students about the impact of graffiti and about making communities safer. These learnings are brought out in the mural, which incorporates words that read like a Whakataukī or proverb, reflecting the values of the people that live in the southern corridor.’
